What is Ho'okumu Hou?

Hoʻokumu Hou encompasses all of the County of Maui’s recovery programs funded by the $1.6 billion in federal Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) funds appropriated for the 2023 Maui wildfires, with a focus on housing initiatives intended to help wildfire survivors receive the means they need to stay, or return, home.

Hoʻokumu means to create the source. The addition of the word “hou” positions the phrase to mean to establish our origin once more. Hoʻokumu Hou speaks of a dream to re-imagine these communities as our ʻohana return – rooted in our shared history and with a clear direction of how we move forward.
